How to compare clothing sizes across brands

Build a simple measurement worksheet before choosing a clothing size: check units, body versus garment dimensions, cut and the details still needing confirmation.

Start with the measurement, then choose the label

A size label is a shortcut within a range, not a reliable comparison between shops. If you usually choose medium, use that as a starting point rather than assuming another brand's medium will fit the same way. Read the chart attached to the actual item you want.

This guide turns the measurement checks in our trouser-buying guide into a reusable worksheet for comparing clothing. It is editorial guidance, not a test of any brand's sizing or a promise of fit.

Identify what the chart measures

Look for whether the numbers describe the shopper's body or the finished garment. Those are different references. Compare body measurements with a body chart; compare a suitable garment you own with a garment chart using the retailer's stated method. Do not compare the two as though they were interchangeable.

Also check the unit and whether a width is measured flat or around the full garment. If the page does not explain the method, leave that comparison unresolved and ask the retailer. Do not invent a conversion or fit allowance to fill a missing detail.

Choose a useful reference garment

Choose an item you already find comfortable for a similar purpose and cut. Compare the measurements the retailer actually provides. For trousers these may include waist, hip, rise and inseam; for a shirt the chart may use a different set of dimensions.

A measurement match alone does not establish the same fit. Record differences in cut, stretch, fastening and how you plan to wear the item. A loose everyday shirt and a fitted occasion shirt need not feel equivalent at similar dimensions. If a detail is missing, mark it unknown.

Copy this worksheet for each shortlisted item

Complete one column per item. Keep the product link beside the numbers so you can revisit the exact listing and selected variant before checkout.

When comparing children’s clothes, record the measurement date

For a child’s garment, keep the measurement date beside the numbers and compare the chart attached to that exact product. Treat an age label as a way to find the relevant chart, rather than proof that another brand’s same age label will be equivalent.

Use the same worksheet to note which measurements are confirmed and which remain unclear. If a chart does not distinguish body and garment dimensions, ask the retailer before choosing. Do not invent a growth allowance or assume that buying a larger label will solve a mismatch.

Resolve uncertainty before comparing the saving

If two sizes appear possible, compare the relevant dimensions and stated construction rather than automatically choosing the larger or smaller label. When the measurement method is unclear, ask the retailer which chart applies to that product and how it was measured.

Check the retailer's current exchange conditions for the exact item and sale. Do not assume an unsuitable size can be exchanged. Include delivery and any known alteration cost when deciding whether the item is worthwhile; an unknown charge should stay visible as unknown.

Use Hilights to shortlist, then confirm at the retailer

Keep a short list of comparable items rather than collecting every discounted option. Use this worksheet to separate a promising fit from one that still needs clarification. The final check belongs on the original retailer's current product page, with the intended size and colour selected.

Hilights helps you discover and compare. The original retailer controls the transaction, availability, delivery and returns. This guide does not advertise a particular current offer or claim that any size is available.

About Hilights

Hilights brings fashion sale listings from tracked brands into one place. We add comparison tools and dated analysis; checkout, delivery and returns are handled by the original retailer. We do not claim to cover every shop or independently test every product.
